Programs Available to Prevent Work-force Violence

A very common problem faced worldwide, is violence against employees and other personnel in thework-place, especially against women. This is not to say that men aren’t affected by it; in fact, men from minorities and ethnic groups are as much a victim of this phenomenon as females across the globe.
With time, dealing with ever more increasing cases of violence is becoming very hard, as not all cases and causes of the violence inflicted; are the same. Hence, the authorities, and even the employers, cannot find an effective solution to deal with this problem.

Dealing an Expensive Blow to Organizations

The cost of violence in the work-place is becoming very heavy for organizations to bear, as it’s virtually impossible for employers to comprehend the enormity of an act of violence against a person or people working in their organization. As a result, a single act or incident of violence in the workplace could very well have a number of serious repercussions.

To the employer especially, work-place violence can and does affect other areas as well, which includes the negative impact on work productivity. Other adverse impacts of violence in the workplace consist of:

  •  Psychological damage to the employees
  •  Permanent/temporary absence of a skilled employee
  •  Damage to the property
  •  Theft and sabotage
  •  An increase in security costs
  •  An increase in personnel costs
  •  An increase in costs for worker’s compensation

The DOL Workplace Violence Program

This is exactly why the government, especially the Defense of Labor, has introduced a type of Management of Assaultive Behavior program to effectively combat violence in the work-force. The program supports and gives a guideline on how to deal with violent or even potentially violent situations that individuals face in the work place.

In this program, special focus is given to the prevention of such situations, by providing resources and guidelines to employees so that they can better understand the very nature of violence in the workplace, how to respond and deal with it, and lastly, how to make sure that the incident doesn’t occur again.

Making a Violence Free Work-force, Your Priority

It is the responsibility of the employer to assure and ensure that no incidents of violence ever occur to any of the people under their employment. If incidents of violence do occur, steps to further prevent such incidents must be considered and creating a working environment free from violence should be a top priority. The ideal solution to this problem is to create a team that is primarily concerned with developing an effective plan to prevent the occurrence of work-force violence and to deal with incidents that do arise in this regard.

Become Advisors to the Employer

Having an advisory council in every organization is perhaps the most surefire way to combat this menace. The team will not only be responsible for reporting to the boss about the incidents, but will also keep the employer in the loop. This job requires an extensive understanding of the psychology concerned with workplace violence, and general knowledge about the legal obligations when dealing with such an incident.

Work-place violence can be dealt with easily and effectively, you just have to know how.
